World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Celebrated at Helpage India Old Age Home at Shey

Leh, June 14: World Elderly Abuse Awareness Day was celebrated at Helpage India, Old Age Home at Shey village. Lt. Governor Brig. (Dr.) B.D.Mishra (Retd.),  was the chief guest and the CEC LAHDC Leh Tashi Gyalson was the Guest of Honour. Distinguished guests include Commissioner/Secretary, Social & Tribal Welfare Padma Angmo;  Padma Shri Dr. Tsering Landol and Councillor Thiksey, Stanzin CHosfail were present

In his address, LG spoke about the Ageing and common  health conditions associated with ageing.  LG emphasised on respecting elders and helping them. He spoke about the strengthening and importance of awareness of laws regarding elderly. He also interacted with the residents of Old Age Home and school present at the event.

Addressing the gathering CEC Tashi Gyalson stressed upon legal aspects related to Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 and appealed to the general people to respect the elderly citizens of society. He assured every possible assistance to Helpage India from the administration. He further added that it aims to encourage the world to pay greater attention to the well-being and adequate healthcare of the elderly.  Further, he added that it is an opportunity to start a conversation regarding elder abuse prevention and what each one of us can do to uphold and protect the rights of the seniors in our communities. Also, he appreciated the efforts of the Helpage India and other organizations working for the betterment of society and promised to support every effort done by the organisation. 

Padma Shri Dr.Tsering Landol also spoke on the occasion and she emphasised mainly on the healthcare of the elderly and advised the young generation to spend more time with elders. 

Advocate Kunzang Landol also spoke about the legal aspects related to the Maintenance and welfare of parents and senior Citizen Act, 2007. 
Colourful cultural performances were also showcased by the students.
