Leh, June 06: Chairman/CEC, LAHDC Leh, Tashi Gyalson inaugurated the “Ladakh Village Artisan Bazaar” at village Hunder today. It is a collaborative pilot project between LAHDC Leh and Hotel Stone Hedge, Hunder. As informed, the project aims to empower local artisans, boost tourism and the local economy, and preserve cultural heritage.
CEC Tashi Gyalson stated that it is a vibrant marketplace showcasing the craftsmanship of local artisans and the flavors of the region. He added that the marketplace represents a significant economic opportunity for the local artisans and food producers. “By purchasing directly from them, tourists play a vital role in supporting their livelihoods and contributing to the preservation of cultural heritage. The market serves as a platform for economic empowerment, allowing artisans to showcase their skills and craftsmanship to a global audience.” Added CEC Gyalson.
Dy Chairman Tsering Angchuk informed that it was an initiative of the local area Councillors to strengthen more connections between tourists and locals. He added that the Bazaar is expected to bridge the gap between travelers and the local community, creating a more authentic and sustainable form of tourism. He also stated that it is a unique concept with first of a kind Public Private Partnership (PPP) project in Nubra region and informed that more such PPP projects are expected in the region soon.
Stanzin Tsephel, Proprietor Hotel Stone Hedge mentioned that the Bazaar marks an exciting milestone in promoting sustainable tourism and supporting the local community. He stated that the Bazaar serves as a vibrant hub where artisans and food producers converge, creating an immersive environment that celebrates the region's rich environment, traditions, and culinary delights.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between LAHDC Leh and Stone Hedge was also signed for the further operation and management of the market during the event.
The market showcases an impressive range of handcrafted souvenirs, including exquisite textiles, woodcraft, artwork, and other locally produced goods.
